For thousands of years — as early as 7,500 B.C. — cats and humans have shared a special relationship. Tens of millions of cats are owned by humans around the world, and many million more are wild or feral. In the United States, more cats belong to humans than any other animal except freshwater fish. Even though most cats sleep between 12 and 16 hours per day, domesticated cats are typically active and social in the morning and evening. More than 73 cat breeds are currently recognized internationally, and the diversity of feline companions includes everything from long-haired to hairless, from calico to pure white, and everything in between.
