There are eight phases of the moon. Another term for phases of the moon is lunar phases because lunar means moon. The moon phases include new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent. The full moon looks like a circle. The new moon is dark, so it seems like there is nothing in the sky even though it is there. The moon just can’t be seen. First-quarter and last quarter moons look like half-moons or semi-circles. The waxing crescent and waning crescent look like a little sliver of the moon.
