Women’s suffrage is the right of all women to vote in elections. Women were not allowed to vote in ancient Athens, and only adult, male citizens who owned land were permitted to cast their votes in elections. The Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 was the first women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls, New York and it was Elizabeth Cady Stanton who proposed women’s suffrage. In 1867, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucy Stone addressed a subcommittee of the New York State Constitutional Convention to revise the constitution and include woman suffrage, to no avail.
