General Educational Development, or GED, was introduced by the North American Council on Education to identify general education development tests that measure a person’s proficiency levels in science, mathematics, social studies, reading, and writing. Those who didn’t complete high school, or didn’t meet the requirements for a diploma, passing these tests can open the door for them to earn their high school equivalency credential. As of 2014, some American states switched to using the HiSET or the TASC, alternate exams, but they carry much of the same merits and opportunities regardless of what they’re called or where they’re earned.
